Freshwater Rays (Aqualog-reference books)
Published in Hardcover by Hollywood Import & Export Inc. (31 March, 2000)
Authors: Ross Richard and Schaefer Frank
Average review score:

Must have for Freshwater Ray Fanatics
I got the book from Amazon.com and it was indeed true to the editorial write up. However I must add that this is a book strictly for the avid freshwater sting ray aquarist. A problem with freshwater stingray is their many "morphs" within the same species and this book has a really comprehensive pictorial of the many "morphs" within the same species. Now I can identify the thirteen freshwater stingrays in my care with certainty. Note that this is not a book on care nor setup of aquariums for frewater rays. It is more a identification and writeup of the characteristics of the many freshwater rays. Strictly for the advanced aquarists specializing in freshwater rays only and hence fully worth the price and the 6 weeks wait I had.

A Must Have For Fresh Water Ray Owners!
While still new to caring for freshwater rays, a friend loaned me a copy of this book, and it quickly became my bible! With many color photos and illustrations, including a dissection photo, this book is a great reference tool for identifying and sexing rays. For those looking to keep rays as pets, the book covers the basic requirements for keeping rays, including tank size, subsrate, and water conditions. The book is also full of helpful words from the author's own experience of keeping freshwater rays, and can help you avoid common problems, diseases, etc. For those who do not plan to keep rays as pets, this book is worth a look simply for its wealth of information on one of the less known types of freshwater aquatic life. An interesting, informative, and essential book for any aquarist!

From X-Rays to Quarks
Published in Paperback by W H Freeman & Co. (October, 1980)
Average review score:

Must read for all history of science enthusiasts
This is a great book on the history of quantum mechanics. I highly reccomend it. Unfortunately the book is out of print and one needs to hunt down a used book.

It begins with the discovery of X-rays in 1895 and ends with events around the early 70's. It is interesting how the technological advances of today have come about after a sudden chain of discoverires starting with just 2 discoveries that acted as sparks: xrays and radioactivity (both of which thanks to some photpgraphic film that developed without the intention of the scientist). The chronological developments are nicely intertwined.

I enjoyed how the author has written of the rigorous development of quantrum mechanics from 3 different viewpoints of schrodinger, heisenberg and dirac and how they later proved that all 3 were the same. There are great photographs of the scientists of the time also. Overall very well written with lots of stories about the featured scientists. Can finish the book in one day, it was that incaptivating (to serve as a reference, am a chemistry student).

Segre brings the history of quantum phusics to life.
Segre's style on physics is straight forward and non-intimidating. But what make this book is his stories. Emilio met and worked with many of these men. He describes their personalities attitudes and politics, and they come alive in his book. This is history the way it ought to be taught. Squisito! Bravo! Bravisimo!

This was an extremely amusing story
I loved this book! The storyline was unique in a way that it really involved you with the characters feelings. Angie, placed an age old history to make you believe what you were reading was possible and could happen. This book deserved the award it received. Please try and read it, definitely a keeper.

Angie Ray's books are wonderful. Every one is a keeper.
This is the fourth of Angie Ray's books that I have read and each one gets better and better. Wonderful characters, witty dialogue and a story that I wished would go on and on

Glasgow Girls: Women in Art and Design 1880-1920
Published in Hardcover by Red Ochre Pr (August, 1993)
Authors: Jude Burkhauser, Ray McKenzie, and Mary Armour
Average review score:

Glasgow women artists get their overdue recognition.
The book discusses the lives and struggles of the women artists at the Glasgow School of Art around the 1920s. The actual show of their work was exhibited at the Glasgow Art Museum and has been preserved in this book. It was a superb show and the book has captured the wonderful artwork of these unique artists for us to view. I cannot tell you how many times I have read it. My regret is that there are too few books like this. I thank the author for her time and effort to bring this gem to light.

Wonderful collection of writings and pictures
Thank you, Jude, for collecting these writings and illustrations of the works of the Glasgow Girls! I was introduced to Francis and Margaret MacDonald during the Charles Rennie MacKintosh exhibit at Chicago's Art Institute.

Since the Art Institute will not do an exhibit on these gals, I only have this book. Just wonderful. I wish there were even more illustrations. I love this stuff - more than the work of the Glasgow Guys.

God Left Us Alone Here
Being in the military myself I have had the opportunity to work with John Gaps recently while deployed to Kosovo. His pictures grab you and show you the shocking truth about what is real. This book is a must read for all future War Correspondents.

A brilliant book by a brilliant photographer.
John Gaps III is a combat photographer for Associated Press. Wounded three times, he clearly gets close to the action. It shows in this book.

Good Night Officially: The Pacific War Letters of a Destroyer Sailor (Reville Book)
Published in Paperback by Texas A&M University Press (April, 2000)
Authors: James Orvill Raines and William M. McBride
Average review score:

This was the real destroyer war in the Pacific
Although some of the love letters become repetitive, this book captures better than anything the true nature of the destroyer war in the Pacific against Japan. The commentary gets to the point of the hard work and anonymous sacrifice of the common enlisted man in the desperate fight against Japan. The final letter written by Yeoman Raines, and delivered to his wife after his death, is one of the most wrenching and moving literary expressions to come from this war.

Real life on a tin can (destroyer) in the South Pacific.
Orvill Raines was my friend. We were together from the time the ship was commissioned 4/3/44 until he died on April 6, 1945 at Okinawa. Ray Ellen (his wife) kept these letters and when I first contacted her in 1990 she mentioned them to me and offered them to the HOWORTH VETS. We published them at our own expense. Williams McBride took the War Diary AND Letters/Memories and completed the manuscript that became Good Night Officially. After our Memorial Service aboard the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge, I escorted her around the ship and was able to answer all the questions that she had, had down thru the years. It made it possible. It made it worth while

The Gothic World of Anne Rice
Published in Hardcover by Popular Press (September, 1996)
Authors: Gary Hoppenstand and Ray B. Browne
Average review score:

An unchartered decent through Rices literature.
The gothic world of Annne Rice is an absolute must have for both fan of the gothic, vampirism or scholar. The anthology is A direct rout into the marvellous world behind the authour. Not only does it convey an unchartered depth of her literature, but is also A direct approach to A more academic criticsim. This book is of universal appeal because it charts A thought provoking desent through her key best sellers. For any reaserching vampirism especially, or just fasinated by this tallented writer this book is essential. It provides integral essays which traverse themes of anthrapology, in which is discussed how |Rice's characters assume A place in modern society, through to her more historical novels. But more invaluable are the essays which discuss her infamous vampire characters. In these essays is disclosed the intrinsic roots of vampirism and the gothic, linking back to writters of the Romantic epoch. They also provide A rich source of information, which deals with the more academic side of the gothic as well as A direct insight into the novels themselves. It is well researched, astute and perceptive. With Rice's work rapidly becoming recognised for its academic appel this book provides A critical idiom of her work and deserves A place on the shelf of any avid fan of the gothic, vampirism, or who is just enchanted by the pen of this literary sorceress.

The G.W.of Anne Rice is a stunning look into the mind of A.R
This book takes you to a place where you can feel the passion of Anne Rices works.he is brilliant. What woundn't a person do to meet the creater of the Vampire Chronicles And The Lifes of the Mayfair Witches. She is incredible.

Growing Great Vegetables in the Heartland
Published in Paperback by Taylor Pub (April, 2001)
Author: Andrea Ray Chandler
Average review score:

A well-rounded book that is a pleasure to read.
What makes this gardening book stand out is the author's writing style that reads as if she is in the room talking to you.

Although I have dozens of gardening books, "Growing Great Vegetable in the Heartland" would rate in my Top Three. Not only for the content of topics, but also her easy to read delivery, the many additional hint's, ideas and beautiful pictures.

Well worth the cover price, my gardening friends will be getting this from me for Christmas!

A "must read" if you garden in the heartland
If you garden in the heartland, this book should be your gardening bible. Ms. Chandler provides tons of information dealing with growing conditions specific to this area, that you won't find in most books. Trust me, this type of knowledge is something that is only gained by years of experience. If you want to save yourself from all the trouble of gardening by trial and error, this book is the answer to your prayers. One of the most comprehensive guides you'll ever find. Enjoy!
